The elementary classes offered at co-op give a variety of choices for families with children of these grade levels.
These classes provide both academic and social enhancement to the homeschool family.
Elementary Course Descriptions
Appalachian Mountain Music (3rd-8th) $25
Trisha Pilkington
The students will learn the history as well as the songs of the Mountains. They will make about 5 mountain style instruments and have hands on learning of other instruments as well. They will learn songs and their meanings, write a song, and hopefully put it all together with a little mountain get down concert.
Tricia has taught music for 30 yrs and had much success teaching this class.
Art Appreciation (3rd/4th) & (5th/6th) $15
Before class begins, we will travel to the William King Museum for an interactive field trip. The class will be an introduction to famous artists and artworks, with simple, practical projects based on the techniques used by a wide range of artists, including Monet, Van Gogh, Jackson Pollack and Damien Hirst. Young artists will create Degas pastel dancers and Van Gogh swirly landscapes amongst other projects. They will also learn the story behind the works of art and the artists who created them. If possible, I would like to end class with our own art show. The text (not required, just for your information) for this class will be The Usborne Art Treasury and the Series - Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists.
Ballet (1st/2nd) $10
Will need pink ballet shoes. Payless is a good place to get them. (The ones at Target and Walmart do not work well)
Bill Nye Science (1st/2nd)- $7

Explore the world of Bill Nye the Science Guy through these fun interactive DVDs and hands on science experiments.
Boys & Girls Who Made History (3rd-4th)- $15

We will trek through the books, 10 Boys Who Made History and 10 Girls Who Made History. You can count on this class to take the place of your history at home. Students will be required to complete weekly homework assignments, papers, and projects.

Welcome back Tara Nanney as our ballet instructor. We are happy to have her back to teach our students the art of ballet. Class fee includes costume.
Geography- (5th/6th grade) $10

Fall will focus on US Geography States/Capitals. The Spring Semester we will study world geography. Students will need to provide a sturdy three ring binder, colored pencils, and pencils each week. Students will learn through worksheets, discussion, games, quizzes, and will have a small amount of homework each week to research various states and/or countries we are learning about and bring in small paragraphs to add to their notebooks. Students will need access to the internet and/or encyclopedias and books about our states/countries each week for research. Quizzes on states/capitals will be given throughout the fall semester.
Each semester can be taken independently as content will NOT be repeated.
Gym- (3rd-6th) $7
Jump on into the class full of physical activity and fun. Learn new games, play with the parachute, and work off some energy, in this popular co-op class.
History through Song (1st/2nd) $15

This semester we'll be singing our way through American History from 1492 through 1865. We'll cover Columbus, Pilgrims, Boston Tea Party, Declaration of Independence and much more. We will also be singing our way through the states and capitols! You will be amazed at all the memory work possible in such a short amount of time.
IEW - SWI-A ( Intro to IEW Style Writing for Upper Elementary Ages ) $30
Class Description: Institute for Excellence in Writing - Student Writing Intensive - A is an introductory class. We will learn how to take key word outlines and write creative stories in the story sequence format and begin report writing. There will be weekly homework and parental involvement is a must through editing homework. Homework may take 1 1/2 to 2 hours each week. This is a year long course.
Class Cost Fall $30 ( to include Student Writing Intensive notebook ) and $10 in the Spring.
** If a student had an older sibling who took this exact course already and will be using their notebook, then the fall cost for that student is $12.

Exploring science concepts through hands on experiments. Some of the concepts we will cover are: water, magnets, electricity and air.
Sign Language (4th-8th) $9

Learn beginning sign language using ASL. We will learn the ASL alphabet, numbers, religious signs, holidays, colors, family, basic conversational phrases, animals and food. We will also prepare a song to present during the closing program.
Spanish (1st/2nd) $5

Spelling (5th/6th) $5
Misty Carter
The purpose of this course will be to teach the spelling of many words, learn to use words correctly, and to teach spelling rules and dictionary skills.
Some homework and periodical testing may be included.
Super Science Lab: "The Sky's the Limit" (5th/6th grades) $15

Super science lab is a hands on science experience. This semester we will study aerodynamics by constructing and observing kites, paper airplanes, balloon rockets, and more. No text is needed for this class.
World from my Window (1st/2nd) & (3rd/4th) $5

This is a class that will allow children to begin to see the world with new eyes and a broader perspective. We will begin in our own homes, families and communities and then begin weekly learning about other countries and people groups. Comparing our lives to others in many different places. We will be studying about their homes, families, jobs, communities and other interesting facts about our world and the people in it.
